What is Contrition of Heart?
Contrition is the state of being contrite; feeling or showing sorrow and remorse for a sin or shortcoming.
Why does man need contrition of the heart?
When one has a contrite heart, or spirit, he is in a position to learn and understand God's purpose for his life. When man's heart is contrite he is aware and remorseful of the sin of his ways, which are not beneficial for his well-being, neither are they pleasing to God. The man with a contrite heart/spirit is no longer leaning to his own understanding, or believing himself to be cleaver. That man compares himself to no one. He has tested his own actions; learning through experience that cleverness profits him nothing.
"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time (1 Peter 5:6).
