Why Kick Against The Pricks (Goads)?

Whenever one fights against what is for his good, he suffers the more. Ever see a drowning man kicking and screaming for help? Life guard jumps into the water to save the drowning man, and the drowning man will continue to kick and scream till the death of himself, and possibly the life guard. God threw out a life line. His name is Jesus. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Unfortunately, man continues to kick and scream all the way till death.

What Is A Goad?

A goad is something that urges or stimulates into action; something that pains as if by pricking, a thorn. An ox goad was used to prod the oxen when plowing; it is a stick with a pointed piece of iron on its tip. Farmers used them to prick the animal to steer it in the right direction. Sometimes the animal would rebel by kicking out at the prick, as a result the prick would be driven further into the animals flesh. In essence, the more an ox rebelled, the more it suffered.

God's Word

God's Word has the answer to everything that troubles man; sin. It is a guide that teaches what's good for man, and what's not good for him. The Word of God is a road map that leads man back to Him for reconciliation; redemption. No one can defeat God's plan, yet man continues to go his own way. Man will try and explain away his actions, kick against the pricks (goads), in order to suffice his ill intentions. Man is without excuse. "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:3-4). In essence, the more man rebels, the more he suffers.

God Will Come To You

The Apostle Paul, then Saul, was on a mission to persecute followers of the Way; Jesus Christ. "And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest. And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?... (Acts 9:1-6).

In the end, Paul joined the Lord, because he knew that He could not beat the Lord.

Why Is It So Easy To Do The Things That Are Bad For Us?

Man has had a craving for sin and death, since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. However, we must heed to God's Word - "There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way; whoever hates reproof will die (Proverbs 15:10).
