Vanity is defined as having excessive pride in one's appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements,etc. It is a character or quality of being vain; conceited. Vanities are empty nothings. Such is everything on earth. "All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again (Ecclesiastes 1:7).
Can Man Ever Be Satisfied
'Oh, if I could just get what I see, then I will be satisfied'. Unfortunately, things cannot satisfy the insatiable human heart. All that man is and has done, irrespective of his riches, power, beauty, or glory, can never satisfy the cravings of his heart."All things are full of labor; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing. nor the hear filled with hearing (Ecclesiastes 1:8).
What Is Man to Do?
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Mathew 6:19-21).
